Just pin your hair up in sections and do what i am about to tell you with each section:

take a piece of your hair and straighten it as you normally would but stop as you reach the bottom, twirl your starighteners arounf so that your hair wraps around it, hold as it gets to your head and hold the straightenrs in place for a second before unravelling.

You need a straightener with a rounded edge, or it won't work, and you have to use a ceramic straightener $60-$300. You use it just as you would a curling iron, make sure your hair is completely dry and put a serum on your hair before use(Biosilk silk therapy, or Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum, both run between $5- $18, depending on the size) This will protect your hair shaft from burning.

The reason that lady said its better, is probably because it closes the cuticle and makes your hair look silkier, however if you use it improperly, the long term damaging effects are far greater than a curling iron.

Oh, and how you use it. Section your hair, start with one 1/2-1 inch subsection. Starting at the top of your head close the straight iron around the subsection and slowly turn and slide down to the ends of your hair constantly turning until you have a curl. You don't start at the ends and curl up. If you have a little divet at the top, just use as a straightener to remove. Good Luck!

you simply curl under at a high degree of heat that is why it does better

Depends on how long your hair is. If your hair is super long, you need to have it done for you. This is because someone has to put a section of the hair in the iron and then move away by pulling the iron outward. Then they have to curl the hair with their finger. If you have short hair, you need to make an angel with the iron when it gets to the bottom of your hair. Remember to use the thin or narrow straighteners.

wrap the sections one by one 180 degrees and slowly pull through to the ends of the hair as you are still turning as you pull through to create soft bouncy curls. For a sexier, looser feel and different texture, use your fingers to gently tease out some of the curls."
