I'm flying into chigaco on wed and have been told by a friend that her straighteners were taken off her at the airport due to voltage differences, has anyone been to the usa lately and experienced this?

they dont take them off you, no rule against taking wrong voltage hair straightners who are you tying to fool. what reason can they take them off you are they liquid or they sharp stop being stupid

I went to USA in 2003, and took mine with me in my main baggage... they weren't taken away and the only difference was that when I plugged them in, they never reached top temperature. They were hot enough to use, but because of the lower voltage in USA, they had to preheat for longer.
They are GHD's by the way.

yeah the voltage system is different so you wont be able to use them there. i think you should leave them behind or youll risk them being taken off you at the aiport. buy a cheap one out there or something.
