Right now I have short hair and I want to grow it long like emos do. Do I need to do anything to prepare my hair? I've heard about layers, but do you get them before or after?
Then, what should I ask my hairdresser to do? Lots of layers? Show a picture? And then do I just grow it out?

just grow it out to your desired length... showing a picture might work, if you have a competent hairdresser, if you don't have a photo, just describe your desired hairstyle to her. Yes, you'll need to straighten it.
