On a scale of one to ten how damaging are hair straighteners?

I use them about 3 times a week - i'm thinking about an 8 without heat protection - could it be higher? My hair is very kinky and i need to straighten it so it looks half decent- anything else i can do so its not damaged?

you have to condition it everytime your going to straighten it so your hair is stronger and doesnt break as easily.....i think its about an 8 too...

I think 6/7 - If you use a good conditioner then I don't think they hurt that much at all.

Ive been using them for ages and they have done my hair no damage (that was until i highlighted my hair!)

the only thing i hate about that is that whenever i wet the tips of my hair it smells like burnt hair,cause it is...

and also the shampoo smell doesnt last that long anymore

probably either 5,6, or7. Hair straighteners dry out your hair but if you take a shower THEN straighten your hair, it doesn't really cause that much harm =D

I am not allowed to use them, so I wouldn't know. I reckon ceramic ones are better for your hair. Um... if you are only using them 3 times a week that is fine, but I would recommend getting some heat protection before you striaghten your hair. Otherwize, no effence but your hair will look damaged and dry.

You can by really cheap naff ones that damage your hair and on a scale of 1 to 10 i would say 5 becase what you are doing is ironing your hair.

I use my hair straighteners everyday on the highest heat, i have very thick chin length hair so i don't have much choice, it goes like a bush if i don't straighten it! My hair is in very good condition though because I always make sure i use plenty of heat protection spray and plenty of conditioner

about a 7, but i REALLY reccomend u get a thermal spray or heat protection serum for your hair because when u straighten it, the ends of ur hair will fray and look really dried out, just go to Wal-Mart and look in the hair care section.

id say about a 6 but it really depends on how you use it, which one you use, and how hot it is

say you use it when your hair is wet..id say its like a 10...

if its got metal plates..id rate it at a 10..

if your using it at the highest heat possible id say 10

but if your using it correctly and since your not over using it id rate it like 4-6.. i use mine only a few times a week and it hasnt ruined my hair at all

The only reason I don't use them on weekends is because I hardly leave the house! lol

I have to put wax on the tips of my hair so it doesn't look so split.

It makes it soft as well ;) But only use it on the tips or it'll make your hair looks really greasy.

From experience, I'd say about 8/9.

You've just got to make sure it doesn't dry out and use conditioners etc.

3 times a week really isn't very much ;)

Well I use a straightener ALL the time.

First thing - It depends on what kind of straightener you have. Like I have a Chi and those are supposed to be better for your hair. Now I know that may sound silly but its true.

Second thing - I use Aussie's Deeeeeep Conditioning Conditioner. And my hair is fine. Of course I have REALLY think hair. =)

So I would have to say its between a 6 and 10.

Speaking personally they have proved to be very damaging. More than twice a week and using products and my hair totally dried out. Please use heat protection there are some really good ones out there . Another idea is to let your hair relax and have a day when you just wash and condition with a deep moisturising cream or oil. Then let your hair dry naturally. Iv'e given up now and let nature have her way , my hair is kinky and curly so that's the way I look.!! A girl in my office washes her hair, smothers it with olive oil and wraps it in a warm towel. leave for an hour and then rinses., she reckons it.s as good as any shop bought or salon treatment.

actually....from som1 close 2 me, i know...

straightners are very damaging...no matter wat type it is...especially if u use it lots n lots....wen u get older, ur hair will fall out, n get thinner..thats wnt b gd....if u do use straightners..use them as less as possible.....say2-3 evry 2 weeks..or jst on special occasions....after using straigtners, n b4 a shower, use hair oil, lots of it,then wait 2-3 hours, not less, then wash the hair..ur hair would be full of volume once dry.....use the best around also...

it depends on the heat the hair straighteners go up to i have GHD's which go up to 180degrees which isn't that bad but if your using cheap ones like from Argos then there more likely to do more damage to your hair as they go up to like 230 degrees most of the ones in there, but id say the damage is10 that's only coz i use mine nearly everyday and my hair is really thin a brittle even though i use salon repair shampoo and conditioner so yea a 10
